He was also influenced by the teachings of Malcolm X. ![]() Eldridge’s unruly conduct continued into adulthood and eventually led to his conviction and imprisonment for assault with intent to commit murder at the age of 22.ĭuring his time in prison, Cleaver read published works by intellectuals such as Thomas Paine, Voltaire, Karl Marx, and Richard Wright. Leroy Eldridge Cleaver was born in Wabbaseka, Arkansas and spent most of his childhood in Los Angeles, California where he was in and out of reform schools for his involvement in petty crimes. ![]()
